Cantell Forensic Science Day

Year 5 become Crime Scene Investigators for the day....

The Year 5 children were invited to Cantell to take part in a truly exciting day!!

The Cantell Science Department offered our Year 5 children the chance to become forensic scientists for the day. The workshop, which was linked to Cantell’s STEM department (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) was a two hour session specifically designed for pupils in Upper Key Stage 2. Pupils spent the first hour and a half learning about the four techniques which may be used by investigators to solve a crime,

  • Fingerprint identification
  • Paper chromatography
  • Fibre analysis (using microscopes)
  • Metal ion flame test

They then carried out their own investigation using the skills they had learned.

When the  children came back from their day, everyone (teachers included) was buzzing with excitement.

I wonder if there are a few budding forensic scientists in Year 5!!
