“Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities”
Article 31
At Bevois Town Primary School, we believe that Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. We are dedicated to creating an enjoyable and engaging experience for all children, equipping them for a lifetime of music making and enjoyment. We aim to embrace our rich cultural diversity by providing children the opportunity to share their own cultures and interests within the context of music.
By encouraging our children to participate in a variety of musical experiences we are actively increasing their self-confidence and sense of achievement. Participating in music will also give the children at Bevois Town an opportunity to express themselves, explore creativity, work hard and persevere. We aim for children to have enough opportunities to experience, create and enjoy music so that they are able to reach their full musical potential as far as their own interests lie.
At Bevois Town Primary school, our music curriculum ensures that all children sing, play, perform, create and experience a wide range of music. Through music lessons and cross-curricular activities children are taught the technical, constructive and expressive elements of music.
Whole School Music
Singing assemblies provide opportunities for children to learn and perform a range of songs.
Events throughout the school calendar embrace music, such as World Music Day and Nursery Rhyme Week. These give children the opportunity for whole-school shared music making and performing.
Children are encouraged to listen to a range of music genres which are played throughout the school for example in classrooms and in assemblies.
Curriculum Music
In the Early Years, music is incorporated consistently into daily routines and is used to enhance teaching of the core curriculum – such as singing nursery rhymes to develop language and number. Children always have access to musical instruments during continuous provision.
Children in KS1 and KS2 are taught music for 1 hour a week covering all aspects of singing, creating, and performing music. The music provision is progressive, teaching and building upon the previous year’s skills, notation and vocabulary.
Instrumental and Vocal Ensembles and Tuition
Children from Year 3-6 are given the opportunity to learn an instrument either as an individual, small group or whole class.
As well as the tuition within music curriculum time, children are offered the opportunity to pursue interests with peripatetic lessons from Southampton Music Service and ensemble lessons with RockSteady. Additionally, throughout the year, children are offered extra-curricular groups such as Ukelele Ensembles and Singing Club.
Musical Events and Opportunities
Children are given regular opportunities to perform:
Whole school performances to peers and parents
Individuals performing in assemblies
Local community performances
We aim to give children the opportunity to experience live music by inviting professionals and local groups into the school for performances and workshops.
Through the rich opportunities that the curriculum offers, when children leave Bevois Town Primary School they will have built a love of music, and be more confident to express themselves creatively. For some, music will become a pursued passion, for others music will become a valuable source of comfort and joy.
