Global Neighbours

'Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves.

Protect the rights of all who are helpless.' Proverb 31:8

What is the Global Neighbours Award?

Global Neighbours is a Christian Aid accreditation scheme that recognises and celebrates the efforts schools make to empower young people as active global citizens. It goes beyond fundraising or picking up litter; it’s about deepening our understanding of global poverty and justice.

Why This Award?

We believe the Global Neighbours Award aligns perfectly with our school's core values, which lie at the HEART of everything we do: Hope, Equality, Ambition, Resilience, and Teamwork.

As we work towards Global Neighbours status, we are becoming courageous advocates, showing Hope by imagining a fairer world and taking steps to make it a reality. Our children are developing a deeper understanding of our shared humanity and the importance of standing against injustice and striving for Equality.

This programme inspires Ambition, showing pupils that change begins with small actions and encouraging them to turn their hopes into action. By tackling challenges, they continue to build Resilience, learning that standing up for what is right isn’t always easy but takes bravery and determination. Working together on projects strengthens Teamwork, as they collaborate to create real change.

Global Neighbours is not only enriching learning across the curriculum but also supporting our school’s vision of equipping pupils with the essential skills to participate responsibly in the world. Through this programme, they continue to grow into confident, knowledgeable, and respectful learners who truly believe they can make a difference.

What is Courageous Advocacy?

‘Courageous advocacy’ means having the bravery to speak out against injustice and take action for positive change. At Bevois Town, we empower our pupils to come together, learn about global challenges, and make a difference - whether by raising awareness, supporting others, or tackling issues within their local and global communities.

Our children live out the school’s values of Hope, Equality, Ambition, Resilience and Teamwork through a wide range of charity work throughout the year. However, being a courageous advocate goes beyond fundraising - it’s about understanding the world’s challenges, amplifying important voices, and taking meaningful steps toward solutions. Through education, discussion, and action, we are helping to inspire our pupils to be agents of change, both in their communities and beyond.

Global Neighbours across the Curriculum

As part of our commitment to ensuring children develop critical thinking skills and understand the interdependence of the world around them, Bevois Town’s curriculum provides opportunities for them to explore their impact and how they can make a positive difference. Across all subjects, children are encouraged to consider their role as Global Neighbours and their responsibility to the world.

Courageous advocacy opportunities within the school are thoughtfully integrated into our curriculum, ensuring that children can make meaningful connections between their learning and social action. While these opportunities are designed to be responsive to issues that arise throughout the school year, they are also aligned with broader global initiatives.

In 2015, world leaders committed to the 17 Global Goals, which aim to create a better world by 2030 by ending poverty, fighting inequality, and tackling the urgent challenges posed by climate change. These goals provide a powerful foundation for many of the courageous advocacy opportunities we offer, linking directly to our curriculum and empowering students to become active, informed global citizens.

The 17 Global Goals are:

Whole School: Courageous Advocacy

Pupil Parliament

Meet the Pupil Parliament – a dedicated team of representatives from Years 2 to 6 who work alongside Mrs. Sadler to make Bevois the best it can be. With ministers for different areas of school life, they ask important questions, challenge ideas, and encourage the school community to think critically about key issues. More than just a voice for change, the Pupil Parliament helps children understand democracy in action, empowering them to take responsibility and make a real impact.

School of Sanctuary

Bevois Town Primary School is a 'School of Sanctuary'. This accreditation recognises schools that are committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all, especially those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space of safety.

At Bevois Town Primary, our School of Sanctuary Ambassadors play a vital role in making sure everyone feels welcome and included. These pupils are dedicated to promoting understanding, empathy, and celebrating different cultures. They work hard to create a real sense of belonging through awareness campaigns, peer support, and community events. By leading the way with kindness and solidarity, they help ensure our school remains a safe and supportive place for all.

Count Your Blessings – Lent and Ramadan (March 2025)

At Bevois Town Primary School, we celebrate and respect the many different faiths and beliefs within our community. This term, children have been learning about both Ramadan, a sacred month in the Muslim calendar, and Lent, a significant period in the Christian calendar. Both traditions involve fasting and deep reflection, encouraging themes such as caring for our world, showing kindness to others, and sharing with those in need.

As Lent and Ramadan overlap this year, we have created a reflection calendar to help children explore values of gratitude, kindness, and self-discipline - central to both traditions. In line with our core value of hope, we’ve been using Christian Aid's ‘Count Your Blessings’ resources throughout both periods to reflect on the blessings in our lives. At the same time, we’ve been focusing on those less fortunate around the world and considering how, as Global Neighbours, we can help reduce inequality.

This calendar, invites families - whether religious or non-religious - to join in reflecting on our place in the world and our shared responsibility for others. Through the calendar, families can engage in weekly activities that highlight the blessings in our lives, the importance of giving, and the power of reflection.

Meeting Southampton's MP, Satvir Kaur (Jan 2025)

The members of Bevois Town’s Pupil Parliament had an inspiring opportunity to meet with Satvir Kaur, the MP for Southampton Test. They engaged in a thought-provoking discussion, learning about her role in Parliament, what motivated her to enter politics, and how she represents the voices of her constituents.

Demonstrating true courageous advocacy, our young leaders didn’t shy away from asking challenging questions about government policies, tackling important issues that matter to them and their community.

She was so impressed by the pupils and the school that, after learning about Bevois Town’s application to become an early adopter in the Labour government’s breakfast club programme, she personally wrote to the Department for Education. In her letter, she urged them to give the application special consideration, recognising the significant level of need in the community.

With only up to 750 state-funded schools selected to take part from April 2025, receiving an invitation to join this programme is a tremendous achievement - one that reflects the school’s commitment to supporting its pupils and ensuring every child gets the best possible start to their day.

A Christmas Prayer (Dec 2024)

This prayer was shared with parents and children as it beautifully resonates with us at Bevois Town, reminding us of the importance of inclusion, love, and hope at this special time of year. Its message reflects the values we hold dear - welcoming and cherishing everyone, no matter their journey or circumstance.

Eco Warriors Take a Stand for Cleaner Air! (Oct 2024)

Bevois Town’s Eco Warriors were back in action, bravely advocating for a healthier environment by tackling engine idling near the school entrance. With confidence and determination, they approached drivers, explaining the harmful impact of idling on air quality and public health.

Equipped with their informative leaflets, the children shared key facts about pollution and encouraged parents to switch off their engines, reinforcing their mission to ensure cleaner air for everyone.

Tidelines Project (July 2024)

Some of our Year 5 and 6 children took part in the Tidelines Project: a collaboration between Southampton University, a local artist (Ricky Tart), and pupils to raise awareness of marine pollution and climate change. Working alongside other schools, they created a rap and contributed poetry, letters, and writing to a published book.

The success of the rap quickly took hold, with Ricky coming back to work with the children to film a music video - this was then released as a single on Spotify!

The project’s impact extended beyond the school, reaching the EU, key stakeholders, and an Advisory Board. The project was recognised for delivering exceptional results with significant immediate or potential impact. Notably, its findings contributed to policy changes, including scrubber wash water discharge bans in Denmark (February 2023), Sweden (January 2023, including the Baltic Sea), and planned restrictions in Finland by 2025.

Tidelines was a key part of the EMERGE project, and we extend our thanks to everyone involved—especially our pupils, whose contributions made a real difference.

Bridges Not Borders (Jan 2024)

Bridges Not Borders, an Arts Council England-funded project led by Susmita Bhattacharya and Aiysha Jahan, brought communities together through South Asian art and literature.

As part of this initiative, Year Six participated in an inspiring workshop where they explored the vibrant tradition of phool patti—the intricate, colourful art that adorns trucks in Pakistan. After learning about its cultural significance, the children created their own bold and expressive designs, each representing their identity or sharing a positive message. Their artwork was later featured in an anthology, unveiled at the Bridges Not Borders exhibition at Portsmouth Guildhall and celebrated globally in an online launch.

Hedgehog Heroes (Jan 2024)

In recognition of the incredible work led by Mrs. Boussot (our Forest School Teacher), and the Wildlife Warriors to make our school grounds more hedgehog-friendly, we were honoured to welcome some very special visitors. The Children's Mayor for Southampton, representatives from Southampton National Park City, Southampton City Council (including the Cabinet Member for the Environment), and the local newspaper joined us to celebrate our success in winning the ‘Hedgehog Champions’ competition.
