The Four Areas of Need
In the SEND Code of Practice (2014), there are four broad areas of special educational needs:
- Cognition and Learning
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties
- Physical and/or Sensory Needs
- Physical and/or Sensory Needs
These areas give an overview of the range of needs children may have. However, individual children can often have needs across all of these areas and they may change over time. The special educational provision made for each child is based on an understanding of their particular strengths as well as their needs.
